with Richard Green, London

After a trip to Algeria in 1837, Frère exclusively painted scenes of the Middle East for the rest of his career. He made a longer trip to the region in 1851, visiting Turkey, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. In 1869, he accompanied the French Empress Eugénie’s entourage to Egypt, his final visit there, on the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal. Frère had established a studio in Cairo, where he regularly painted outdoors and on location, and was awarded the title of Bey (Lord) by the Egyptian government.
