of shallow domed form, chiseled and chased with a register of lotus palmettes bordered by narrow scroll bands, the neck and circular everted handle decorated with concentric petals, the interior decorated with bands of cursive calligraphy in naskh script

This piece is closely related to another lid in a private collection that also combines an interior of thuluth with an exterior of lotus palmette register, see Zebrowski, M., Gold, Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, London, 1997, p.341, no.558. It is possible that most footed bowls from this group were originally covered by lids of this type (ibid. p.347).
