A photograph taken by Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf in 1936 shows Konyak Naga tribeswomen wearing necklaces similar to the present lot, layered one upon another for decorative effect (see Jacobs, J., The Nagas, Society, Culture and Colonial Encounter, London 1990, p.131).
