opaque watercolour and gold on paper, inscribed in small gold letters at top edge in Persian “the place Lahore the year 1838 Christian”; larger posthumous dedicatory inscription in black across sky “General Allard Sahib Bahadur, formerly a commander of France, assigned to the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, may he rest in peace”; inscription in small black letters on the secretary’s paper “to the most generous Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bahadur in the province of Punjab”; narrow inner back border with gold foliate motifs, narrow pink outer border
