Description
[Apollo 17]
National Aeronautics and Space Administration Lunar Topographic Map Taurus-Littrow. [Bethesda, Maryland]: Defense Mapping Agency Topographic Center for NASA, September 1972.
Lunar topographic photomap based on Apollo 15 photographic data, 29 x 43 inches.
FIRST EDITION. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Apollo 17 Mission Commander GENE CERNAN: "THE VALLEY or TAURUS LITTROW / Last Lunar Footsteps of / the 20th Century - / Gene Cernan / Apollo XVII / December 1972."
Photography from the Apollo 15 mission — used to produce this map — showed that the Taurus-Littrow Valley would be the most suitable landing site for Apollo 17. The Taurus–Littrow Valley was selected as the Apollo 17 landing site with the objectives of sampling ancient lunar highlands material and young volcanic material at the same location.
