Perhaps the most talked-about Nike SB Dunks of 2008, this infamous Nike Dunk High Pro ‘Heaven’s Gate’ never actually hit retail shelves. One of a small number of known pairs, this unreleased sample was inspired by “Heaven’s Gate,” a religious group known for committing mass suicide in 1997, where 39 members were found dead all wearing the same exact outfit, which happened to include a pair of black and white Nike Decades.
Nike SB team rider Todd Jordan designed the Dunk High in a black, white, and purple colorway as an homage to the cult members. Using several different premium materials, the overall design made this one of the finest crafted Dunks of 2008. Soft black leather was used for the toe and side panels, black suede for the toe box and flap, and the purple canvas was used for the eye stays and collar. One of the most attractive details on the shoe is the light blue lining and the light blue accents on the purple mesh tongue. A white leather Swoosh completes the look.
This sample pair comes with the hang tags still attached. Samples are sneakers made by the manufacturer either for promotional purposes or for testing various design aspects.
What sets Nike SB apart from other competitive brands is the unbridled creativity, collaborators, materials and whimsical, highly thematic designs that define a generation of sneakerheads. Nike has explored hundreds of concepts — often with a sense of humor — through its Nike Dunks. From design inspiration that ranges from beer bottles, to guitar cases, to horror films, animals, arts and cities, the Dunks represent some of the most beloved and creative models for the brand.
