One of the principal Christian symbols used in the decoration of vestments and church textiles is the 'Pelican in her piety'. According to legend the Pelican pierced her own breast to feed her young with her blood. This came to symbolise the Christ's love of his church, and his sacrifice on the cross (Crucifixion). In ancient Rome pietas (pelicans) signified devotion to one's parents. The wreath around the smaller motif of the pelican in her piety on the other panel, may be symbolic of the crown of thorns.
