Attributed to Frans Pourbus the Elder

Bruges 1545/6 - 1581 Antwerp

Portrait of Margaret, Duchess of Parma and Governor of the Netherlands (1522-1586)

oil on copper; silver laurel wreath frame

55mm. diameter

Inventory, 1949, 'A miniature: Mary, Queen of Scots, 1586 in silver frame' in the Strong Room

After the head in the three quarter length portrait of Margaret of Parma by Antonis Mor in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Mor and Pourbus were closely associated in the early 1570s, the former having contacted the latter in 1572 for assistance in finding apprentices in Antwerp. Pourbus's mature work clearly shows the influence of his friendship with Mor, one of the leading Netherlandish portrait painters of the late sixteenth century.
