Description

A silk and gilt-metal thread, or nué cope hood, possibly Flemish, 16th century

worked in or nué technique with a scene of monks and soldiers

47.5cm. high, 48cm. wide; 1ft. ⁶⁄₇in. high, 1ft. ⁶⁄₈in. wide

Unlike the chasuble, the cope always retained a vestigial hood, which is no longer functional as such, but as the overall decoration of the cope died out the hood often became the vehicle for detailed symbolic scenes. It was not unusual for them to be finely worked in the technically difficult gold work and accompanying shading techniques of 'or nué.'
