A Kakiemon dish

Edo period, late 17th century 


the shallow dish with floral rim on tripod feet, decorated in iron red and gilt, blue, green, yellow and black enamels with a central ho-o bird and dragons to the border 


18.5 cm., 7¾ in. diam.

This design was copied by Meissen, circa 1730-35, for a Meissen example in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, see Masako Shono, Japanisches Aritaporzellan im sogenannten Kakiemonstil als Vorbid fur die Meißener Porzellanmanufaktur, (Munich, 1973), pl. 31.
