A Japanese brass-mounted red lacquer chest, Ryukyu Islands, late 17th/18th century


the rectangular box with close-fitting cover, decorated in red lacquer and gilt, including 'mon' symbols in a field of foliage and scrolls, with a carrying handle to each side and an ebonised interior

59.5cm. high, 92cm. wide, 56cm. deep; 1ft. 11 ½2in., 3ft/ ¼in., 1ft. 10in.

We were not able to ascertain how the present chest entered the collection at Spetchley Park but it may possibly have been acquired by Thomas Berkeley of Ravenshill (1652-1719) or his son John (d.1741)

There is an example of a very similarly decorated lacquer chest (including the metal fittings) in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, museum number M.90.99.5: https://collections.lacma.org/node/224918
