A Batavian silver tray

early 18th century, marked with town mark and K with dot mark


Shaped-rectangular form, with a gadroon and foliage border, engraved on the underside with a presentation inscription to the Duchess of Rutland,

51.5cm., 20 ¼ in. long

1751gr., 56oz.

Lady Violet Manners,

thence by descent to the present owner.

This tray and its inscription are recorded among the many wedding presents given on the occasion of the marriage at St. Margaret, Westminster, of the Hon. Hugo Charteris, eldest son of Lord and Lady Elcho, and grandson of Francis Richard Charteris, 10th Earl of Wemyss, with Lady Violet Manners, second daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland.


A contemporary report reads: ‘Antique silver tray, engraved at the back, “Presented to Lady Violet Manners, on the occasion of her marriage, by the Parishioners of Great and Little Rowsley, as a mark of affection and esteem.’ (The Grantham Journal, Grantham, Saturday, 4 February 1911, p. 3d)
