One of Metallica’s most emblematic album covers, signed by the band, including Cliff Burton. Master of Puppets was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of metal, and it continues to be one of the most influential albums in the genre. The record sold half of a million copies upon release, with effectively no commercial radio play and no mainstream promotion. If their first two albums, Kill ‘Em All and Ride the Lightning, took their cues from the new wave of British heavy metal and laid the foundation for thrash, Master of Puppets solidified the band’s status as the leaders of the thrash metal movement. Unsatisfied with their attempts to record the album in the US, the band traveled to Sweet Silence Studios in Lars Ulrich’s native Denmark. It would be the last album to feature Cliff Burton on bass before his death during the European leg of the tour in support of the record.
