Description
John Lennon and Yoko Ono
U.S.A. Surpasses All the Genocide Records! New York, [ca. 1966-1968]
Offset print (553 x 878 mm). Designed by George Maciunas, printed in red and blue in the shape of an American flag, circular blind stamp to lower right corner reading "Lennon - Ono | Certified 1970 - 1974 | Original Gallery Ad"; a few tiny closed marginal tears, some light creasing to corners.
George Maciunas was a founding member of the avant-garde Fluxus movement, of which Yoko Ono was an integral figure. In a 1963 manifesto, Maciunas defined some of the tenants of the movement, calling upon readers to: "Purge the world of bourgeois sickness, ‘intellectual’, professional & commercialized culture, PURGE the world of dead art, imitation, artificial art, abstract art, illusionistic art, mathematical art, — PURGE THE WORLD OF 'EUROPEANISM'! PROMOTE A REVOLUTIONARY FLOOD AND TIDE IN ART, ... promote NON ART REALITY to be fully grasped by all peoples, not only critics, dilettantes and professionals. ... FUSE the cadres of cultural, social & political revolutionaries into united front & action."
"U.S.A. Surpasses All The Genocide Records!" was an unsigned product of Implosions Inc., a commercial arm of the Fluxus movement.
