Lewis Baltz’s second portfolio, Nevada, is a collection of 15 black and white photographs taken in the area surrounding Reno.  In these images, Baltz exposes the awkward encroachment of the suburbs into the raw, open desert, depicted through his photographs of barren brushy landscapes carved by desire paths and soil criss-crossed with bulldozer tracks.  His thesis is underscored through several motifs: photographs in the desert sun contrasted with those taken in the glow of lightbulbs; clever flattening of space to draw attention to shape and texture; and studies of man-man structures placed next to desert flora.
