Going Deeper | Peyton Manning

In 1998, Peyton was drafted with the first overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts. Before his arrival, the Colts had previously struggled, only advancing past the first round of the playoffs once in over 20 seasons. Manning’s arrival provided hope for Indianapolis.

Peyton’s rookie season would prove to be a breakout one. Starting all 16 games that season, Peyton set Colts and NFL rookie records for completions (326), attempts (575), passing yards (3,739), and touchdowns (26).

After five productive years with the Colts, Manning had a career-defining year in the 2003 season. Capturing his first of five NFL MVPs (the most all-time), Manning led the Colts to a strong 12-4 record to win the AFC South. During the season, Manning led four game-winning drives, three of which capped off fourth-quarter comebacks. He would also secure his first playoff wins, first against the Denver Broncos in the Wild Card round, and the second against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional round.

In 2007, after trailing the Patriots 21-3 in the AFC Championship game, Manning led the Colts to a 38-34 victory to advance to the Super Bowl. Facing the Chicago Bears, Manning threw for 247 yards and earned his first ring along with Super Bowl MVP honors.

Peyton ended his time with the Colts as one of the most celebrated players in franchise history. A 5-time MVP and a 2-time Super Bowl champion, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players in history.

In 2021, in his first year of eligibility, Manning was inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame.
