Rubber Ball
Circa 1992
There have been many basketball teams, but there will only be one Dream Team. Their names were already legendary before the players were tapped for the roster of the 1992 US men’s Olympic basketball team: Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen and of course, Michael Jordan, the brightest star in a constellation of supergiants. As what many consider the greatest sports team ever assembled, the global impact of The Dream Team is still very much felt to the present day.
The ball is signed by Dream Team players Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Christian Laettner, and Chris Mullin as well as coaches Chuck Daly, Mike Kryzyzewski, Lenny Wilkens, P.J Carlesimo and George Raveling. The ball also features a signature from USA Select Team player Rodney Rogers.
This 1992 Team USA basketball is signed by members of the team. This lot is accompanied by a letter from James Spence Authentication in regards to the signatures.
Going Deeper | The Dream Team
Chuck Daly, the coach of the 1992 Dream Team famously said, “It was like Elvis and the Beatles put together. Traveling with the Dream Team was like traveling with 12 rock stars. That's all I can compare it to.”
In 1992, for the first time, professional athletes from the NBA were allowed to compete in the Olympic Games. After America’s 3rd place finish in the 1988 (Cold War era) Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea and the Soviet Union’s Gold Medal performance, the USA rallied perhaps the most remarkable assemblage of teammates to ever play together – in any sport. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, and Scottie Pippen were just some of the names that played for Team USA in 1992. 11 of the athletes that played for the ‘Dream Team’ were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
