This Japanese animated fantasy film was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli. It tells the story of a ten year old girl who, just having moved to a new neighbourhood in the countryside, finds herself in the world of Japanese Shinto folklore with demons, spirits, and evil gods, and where people are turned into beasts, including her parents who are turned into pigs by a witch. The young girl takes a job working at the bathhouse in order to try and free herself and her parents and return to their world. This film is regarded as one of the best animations of the 21st century. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards—a rare accolade for a hand-drawn, non-English speaking film.
