In May of 1953, over 800 members of the New York chapter of the Distributive, Processing and Office Workers union staged a weeks-long walk-out against the Hearns Department store, in protest against management attempting to eliminate minimum wage standards, seniority provisions, severance pay, and health and welfare programs. Hearns was one of the largest department stores in New York, located on 14th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.
