unframed: 62.5 x 112.5 cm.; 24⅝ x 44¼ in.

framed: 78.6 x 128.8 cm.; 31 x 50¾ in.

Traditionally said to have been painted for Philip Papillon (1660–1736), Member of Parliament for Dover;

Thence by descent to a private collection, UK;

From whom said to have been acquired by Aldbase International, Dulwich (according to notes from the present owner);

With Owen Edgar Gallery, London;

From whom acquired by the present owner in 1988 for £38,000.

Other versions of this popular composition, made famous by Jan Griffier the Elder (1645/52–1718), are in the National Maritime Museum, London.This particular painting can be compared to a signed work by Jan Griffier the Younger dating to 1732, which sold at auction in 1931.2
