Thomas Wijck was in Rome in the early 1640s, where his style developed in the tradition of other northern artists active in the city, such as Pieter van Laer and Andries Both. The present picture, on its oak support, was almost certainly painted on his return from Rome, in his native Haarlem, where he continued to paint Italianate subjects for the following three decades. The choice of a humble backstreet scene as a subject for depiction links this painting by Thomas Wijck with the work of the Bamboccianti.
