J. Steegman, A Survey of Portraits in Welsh Houses, vol. 2, Cardiff 1962, p. 96, no. 36 (as N. Dance).

Sir William Boothby, 7th Baronet (1746–1824), was the younger brother of Sir Brooke Boothby, 6th Baronet (1744–1824), and was his heir for a mere three months before his own death in March 1824. Amongst his professional pursuits Sir William was for many years Major in the Mansfield troop of Yeomanry Cavalry, and later Major of the 51st. He is recorded as having been stationed in Minorca during part of his military career. In this beautifully preserved portrait by Nathaniel Dance, R.A. (1735–1811), Sir William is painted wearing an officers' jacket of of the 51st, including the gilded buttons inscribed with the numbers of his regiment.
