St Paul's Bay is located in the northern part of Malta and takes its name from Saint Paul's shipwreck during his voyage from Caesarea to Rome.

Lear knew Malta well and visited many times. In September of 1865 he travelled there again, renting lodgings near the port of Valetta. He was to remain on the island for almost three months, before travelling on to Corfu, via Dalmatia and Montenegro.
