where acquired by the parents of the present owners 
Alexander Pope was born in Cork, Ireland, into a family of artists. He entered the Dublin Schools in 1776 and remained there for a number of years before returning to Cork. In 1785 he moved to London where he combined working both as a professional actor and as an artist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1785 and 1821. The British Museum holds a watercolour portrait by Pope, of Henry Grattan.1
