Watercolour over pencil, heightened with gum arabic;

signed on a seperate sheet preserved within the frame: Smith

353 by 515 mm

The Hon. Winthrop Aldridge (1885-1974), American Ambassador to Great Britain;
sale, New York, Christie’s, 9 June 1981, lot 133,
where acquired by the parents of the present owners 

The measurements of present sheet are comparable with the watercolour views of the Lake District that Smith executed at the request of John Christian Curwen (1756-1826, of Workington Hall.1
