John Davis was an artist and architect who lived in Italy between 1820 and 1821. Upon his return to England he worked in and around London and he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1865.

It has not so far been possible to identify the grand monastery buildings seen here, but from their architecture it would seem that they must be located in southern Italy or Sicily.
