Jacob de Wit was the leading decorative painter working in Amsterdam from around 1720 until his death in 1754. Having studied in Antwerp as well as Amsterdam, he was familiar with the grand ceiling decorations of Rubens, a number of which he copied in a historically important series of watercolors. Returning to Amsterdam, De Wit was well placed to satisfy the burgeoning market for decorative ceilings and overdoors, which the wealthy merchants of Amsterdam were commissioning not only for their splendid town houses on the Amsterdam canals, but also for their country residences, in the region of Haarlem and down the River Vecht, towards Utrecht.

Quite a number of De Wit's decorative paintings survive today in these elegant residences, but no painting corresponding with the present drawing has yet been identified. It must, though, have been made as a design for such a work.
