Description

Lots 306-373: Property from the Collection of A.M. ('Ton') van den Broek

Attributed to Jacob Cats

Altona 1741 - 1799 Amsterdam

Castle ruins by a river

Pen and gray ink and wash over red and black chalk, within black chalk framing lines;

signed and dated in brown ink, verso (partially erased): J: Cats ad viv / 1771 - 95

90 by 175 mm; 3½ by 6⅞ in.

With R. de Jong, Haarlem, 1982,
where acquired by A.M. (Ton) van den Broek (1932-1995), Haarlem (bears his mark, verso, not in Lugt)
We are grateful to Gajus Scheltema who has confirmed, having examined the drawing in the original, that although it is stylistically untypical of Cats, the signature and date on the verso are indeed in his hand.

Sold together with a print by Anthonie Waterloo, showing the same unidentified castle ruins in reverse (Hollstein, vol. 26, no. 2(2)).
