Pencil, pen and gray ink, gray wash, within drawn brown wash margin;

dated, lower left: 1762, signed, lower right: door C.V. Noorde na't Leven get: and inscribed in lower margin: Gezigt van de Blinkert op de stad Haarlem.

189 by 303 mm; 7½ by 11⅞ in.

Sale Amsterdam, Christie's, 13 November 1995, lot 222;
A.M. ('Ton') van der Broek (1932-1995), Haarlem (without his collector's mark, but with a pencil inscription, verso, noting that this was his last purchase)

Engraved by the artist himself in 1763, in Aangnename Gezichten in der vermakelijke Landschouwen van Haarlem, Haarlem, 1761-1763, II, p. 45.

'De Blinkert' is still a row of dunes to the west of Haarlem, which has over the centuries provided an excellent vantage point from which artists could make panoramic views of Haarlem. The location is also close to the famous inn 'Kraantje Lek', another familiar subject for artists, which is represented in the excellent drawing by Paulus van Liender in this collection (see lot 326).
