Giuseppe Bernardino Bison was one of the last great proponents of Venetian view painting. Following previous generations of masters such as Carlevaris, Canaletto, Marieschi and Guardi, Bison carried on the tradition in a distinctly nineteenth-century vein.
Like many of Bison’s much sought-after views of Venice, this work is based on Canaletto’s larger painting in the Uffizi, Florence.1 Compared to that of his predecessor, Bison’s palette is more warmly colored, enlivened by vibrant touches of red in the banners and costumes of the figures.
