Possibly Powerscourt House, Co. Wicklow, Ireland (according to an inscription on the reverse of the canvas);

Private collection.

The unknown sitter in this portrait appears to be holding a copy of one of the celebrated publications by Catholic theologian Thomas Stapleton (1535–1598): either Promptuarium Catholicum in Evangelia Dominicalia (Cologne, 1592); Promptuarium Catholicum in Evangelia Ferialia (Cologne, 1594); or Promptuarium Catholicum in Evangelia Festorum (Cologne, 1592).
