Description
After Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn
Judas returning the thirty pieces of silver
oil on oak panel
unframed: 81.3 x 105.4 cm.; 32 x 41½ in.
framed: 99.7 x 123.8 cm.; 39¼ x 48¾ in.
Paul Bottenwieser, Berlin and Frankfurt (according to a chalk mark on the reverse of the panel).
This painting is a 17th– or 18th–century copy after the original painted in 1629 by the young Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn that is today in a private English collection.1 The scene records a rare biblical scene (Matthew 27: 3-11) of a remorseful Judas returning the thirty silver coins given to him by the high priests in exchange for the arrest of Jesus.
