London 1769–1859 Cheshunt

The Spanish Farm Yard

oil on hardwood panel

unframed: 46 x 61 cm.; 18⅛ x 24 in.

framed: 69 x 84.5 cm.; 27⅛ x 33¼ in.

Almost certainly purchased by, or commissioned by, William Wigram (1780–1858);

Thence by descent to his half-brother, Henry Loftus Wigram (1791–1866);

Thence probably by family descent to Sir Frederick L.F. Fitzwygram, 4th Baronet (1823–1920);

Thence by family descent to the present owner.

Known as a great admirer of Northern landscape paintings, this work by James Ward appears to pay homage to the art of the Dutch Golden Age painter Paulus Potter (1625–1654), an artist who excelled in this genre centuries before Ward's lifetime.
