This portrait of the ill-fated King Charles X of France, whose reign lasted just less than six years, is derived from Daniel Saint's (1778–1847) miniature of the Bourbon monarch of which multiple versions are known. The best example to appear on the art market, which sold at auction in 2006, was purportedly given by the King to a M. de Verdun, according to text engraved on its frame.1 Saint's likeness of the King was also published in Paris by Pierre Audouin (1768–1822) in 1818.2
1 Miniature, oval, 11.2 cm. Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 12 June 2006, lot 94, for £18,000.
