Description

Attributed to Pieter Thijs

Antwerp 1624–1677

Portrait of an Archbishop, bust-length, in his clerical robes

oil on canvas, unframed

70.7 x 58 cm.; 27⅞ x 22⅞ in.

This painting was undertaken by the Antwerp born Pieter Thijs, a pupil of Anthony Van Dyck (1599–1641) who continued working in his master's style long after his death in 1641. Thijs' distinctive brushwork, executed with a particular liveliness that is often absent from Van Dyck's second Antwerp period, is found in abundance here. The rendering of the flesh tones may be compared to the artist's portrait of the statesman Maximus Gerardi (1617–1701) in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, which is dated 1662.1
