C. Payne and C. Brett, John Brett - Pre-Raphaelite Landscape Painter, New Haven and London 2010, p. 236, no. 1350, reproduced p. 236.
London, Royal Academy, 1890, no. 458.
This work was based on a sketch painted on 13 September 1890 (sold in these Rooms, 10 March 2005, lot 218) when Brett was staying at The Grange, Robin's Hood's Bay, near Scarborough. The present picture was sold to Brett's friend and patron Willie Pye. The inscription on the reverse (not in Brett's hand) is inaccurate and at some point the picture was placed in a frame made for another work (depicting Treyarnon Bay). The view is of Whitby from Fylingdales Moor, with the ruins of Whitby Abbey visible on the skyline, to the right of the town.
