Description

Multi-Fish Triptych Mural

Phareodus encaustus, Diplomystus dentatus, Cockerellites liops, Knightia eocaena

Early Eocene (approx. 56 - 48 million years ago)

Green River Formation, Lincoln Co., Wyoming

Each panel measures 47 x 29 x 3 inches (119 x 73.7 x 7.62 cm); Largest fish (Phareodus encaustus) measures 21 x 9 inches (53.3 x 22.9 cm). 101 pounds (45.8 kg) together.

Approximately 50 million years ago, the Green River Formation comprised an area of more than 25,000 square miles (65,000 sq. km) of interconnected subtropical lakes spread across the current states of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Today, the region of the Green River Formation known as "Fossil Lake" boasts some of the most abundant and well-preserved freshwater fossils anywhere in the world.

Highlights of this three panel fossil mural include two large and wonderfully preserved examples of the carnivorous Phareodus encaustus, a large array of Knightia eocaena upon which Phareodus would have predated, the large surface-feeder, Diplomystus dentatus, characterized by its distinctive upturned mouth bristling with teeth, as well as their contemporary, the temperate bass species Cockerellites liops. This multi-fish mural on natural rock matrix captures a snapshot in time of an ancient North American ecosystem.
