Description

Kunzite

Urucum Claim, Conselheiro Pena, Minas Gerais, Brazil

12.1 x 3.24 x 2.52 cm (4¾ x 1¼ x 1 in). With custom acrylic and metal stand.

Named in honor of renowned Tiffany & Co. mineralogist George Frederick Kunz who first identified this species of spodumene, this doubly-terminated single crystal of lilac kunzite exhibits excellent transparency allowing for full appreciation of kunzite's pleochroism, or its propensity to change hues depending on the viewing angle. The crystal features a beautiful, naturally-etched surface, the result of water flowing around it during formation. This specimen originates from the relatively parsimonious and thus highly desirable Urucum Claim in Brazil, rather than from Afghanistan where many other kunzites are found.
