Dr. Nicholas J. Demerath, II (1913-1986), a renowned sociologist, received his PhD from Harvard in sociology and was Chair of Sociology at the Washington University in the 1950s-1960s. His areas of specialization were community planning, government and university administration, economic change, and public policy, with an emphasis on agriculture, housing, health, and family planning. Between 1965-80, he traveled to India a number of times for projects and to teach courses. He was an avid art collector and bought this work on one of his many trips.
