Ivor Roberts- Jones is best known as a sculptor of such notables as the artist Augustus John, the violinist and conductor Yhudi Menuhin and the poet Rupert Brooke. His most iconic work is the monumental sculpture of Winston Churchill which currently stands in Parliament Square. The work was commissioned in 1971, and the present bronze was a maquette for this piece. Oscar Nemon had originally been considered for the commision, but reaction to his initial ideas were mixed. Eight sculptors were then asked to submit their plans for a committee to review, of which Nemon and Roberts-Jones’s designs were shortlisted. After a few suggested amendments to the initial design, the committee unanimously awarded the commission to Roberts-Jones.
