Gallery Hashimoto, Tokyo

Born in Tokyo in 1973, Tsugami Miyuki works in the tradition of landscape painting. After completing her master’s degree at the Kyoto University of the Arts in Fine Art in 1998, Tsugami received the Vision of Contemporary Art (VOCA) Award in 2003 and later took part in a residency programme in 2005 organised by the Ohara Museum of Art, Okayama. As part of the Gotoh Memorial Foundation Award for Fine Art in 2013, Tsugami travelled to the United Kingdom for a one year stay to develop her practice. There she studied the long tradition of British landscape painting and cultivated her own landscapes, often designated as ‘Views’, further. The present work, rendered in an explosive palette of riotous colour, depicts a panoramic vista seen from the ancient volcano of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland, bathed in the light of midafternoon.

Examples of Tsugami’s works are in numerous museum collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT), go to:
