Recto: Study of a gnarled tree trunk and subsidiary studies
Verso: Study of a tree
Pen and brown ink and wash with touches of coloured wash, over traces of black chalk, on paper washed light blue (recto and verso);

and an old attribution on the mount: Bloemaert
235 by 325 mm
Though this fine, large double-sided sheet was unknown to the late Bloemaert scholar Jaap Bolten its subject and manner of execution allow it to fit very securely within a small group of tree studies by the artist that Bolten dated to circa 1595-1605.
One of these sheets is in the collection of the Kunsthalle, Bremen and depicts Three leafless trees1 while a second double sided drawing in the Getty, Los Angeles,2 has a verso that can, once again, be closely compared with the verso of the present work.
