François van Knibbergen

Dutch, active circa 1629 - after 1664

Country Road, with buildings to the left

Black chalk and grey wash, within pen and dark brown ink framing lines;

bears numbering in pen and brown ink, upper right: No. 32

134 by 190 mm

Dr. N. Beets, his sale, Amsterdam, Frederik Muller, 9-11 April 1940, lot 155 (as Salomon Ruysdael);
Gerard Meijer (b.1946), Rotterdam (L.5805)

As the unidentified sale catalogue entry attached to the mount records, this energetic and atmospheric drawing was formerly attributed to Salomon van Ruysdael, but in fact it seems close to the one known signed drawing by the Hague landscape painter François van Knibbergen, an intriguing sheet now in Leiden.1 The sharp, almost ink-like accents of dark chalk and swirling foreground shading are comparable in both drawings.
