Saint Antoine d'Egypte

albâtre avec restes de polychromie ; sur un socle en velours rouge

H. 50,5 cm ; 19 ⅞ in.

H. (totale) 59,5 cm ; 23 ⅜ in.

This characterful alabaster figure portrays Saint Anthony Abbot, who is portrayed with his emblematic attributes, a book held in his left hand and a small pig depicted at his feet. The carving of the beard, with long individual tresses of hair are finely sculpted with curving lines, and compares to a 15th century alabaster head of Saint John the Baptist in the Bayriches National Museum in Munich, which is attributed to the circle of the Master of Rimini, Southern Netherlands (inv. no. 10/35).
