Saint Martin and the beggar
polychromed and partially gilt limestone
78 by 62cm., 30 3/4 by 24 1/2 in.
Private collection, Belgium
The composition of the present sculpture appears to be broadly derived from a group of Saint Martin and the beggar in the Church of Saint Martin, Côte-d'Or, dating to circa 1460-70 and illustrated by Boccador, op cit., no. 314. Saint Martin wears a distinctive hat that is affixed with a fictive stone, which compares to a late 15th century statue of Saint Gandolf originating from the Saint Georges church of Nancy and is now in the Musée Lorrain.
