Jan Miel, a Flemish painter and engraver who lived and worked in Rome, likely painted this serene landscape in the late 1630s. The depiction of golden light through the application of thin glazes, the overall tonality of the composition, and the striking contrast between the sharply rendered figures in the foreground and the hazy landscape beyond are all characteristic of Miel's artistic production during this early period of his career.
