This painting of Smithfield Market follows a print engraved in 1831 by Richard Gilson Reeves after a work by James Pollard. It shows Smithfield's historic outdoor livestock market, which operated from the 10th century until about 1852 when it was relocated for sanitary reasons from London's city center to Islington.
