Saint Mary Magdalene

oil on canvas

canvas: 25 ⅞ by 20 in.; 65.7 by 50.8 cm.

framed: 29 ½ by 23 ½ in.; 74.9 by 59.7 cm.

With Robert Simon, New York (as Giovanni Battista Beinaschi);

From whom acquired by the present collector.

Imbued with baroque drama, this evocative depiction of Saint Mary Magdalene renders the penitent saint with tears streaming down her cheeks. Her upturned gaze, slightly parted lips, and watery eyes all underscore the depth of her religious fervor. The work's execution—the rapid brushwork evident in the face is markedly more animated than the facture of the hair and chest—suggests that Brandi himself executed the Magdalene's visage and a member of his workshop finished the painting.

We are grateful to Dr. Erich Schleier for his assistance cataloguing this lot and to Dr. Guendalina Serafinelli for endorsing the attribution to Brandi and his workshop.
