Augusta of Bavaria (1788-1851) was the eldest daughter of the first Bavarian King, Maximilian I Joseph (1756-1825). In 1806, she married Eugène de Beauharnais who was the son of the Empress Joséphine from her first marriage. He was later adopted by Napoleon. Eugène de Beauharnais served as Viceroy of Italy under the First French Empire. After the fall of Napoleon, the couple settled in Augusta's native Munich and were granted the title of Duke and Duchess of Leuchtenberg by her father.
