Two highly prestigious companies in their respective fields, Patek Philippe was founded in Geneva as a watch manufacturer in 1839, and Tiffany & Co. was established as a jeweler in New York in 1837. It is surprising that two companies, located on the other side of the planet and established just two years apart, would eventually cross paths.

The story of these two brands dates back to 1851. Antoine Norbert de Patek, on his first trip to the United States, sought a worthy retailer capable of selling his complicated pocket watches in the New World. He found his way to the store of Charles Lewis Tiffany, who would have thought a firm handshake between the two figureheads would mark the beginning of a long-lasting partnership – to be endured for over a century and a half. Antoine Norbert de Patek was amazed by the sheer volume of business done by the New York jeweler, who placed an order of 150 watches.

Over time, the partnership between the two brands only grew stronger. In 1876, the two companies renewed a contract that appointed Tiffany & Co. as the main representative of Patek Philippe in the United States, safeguarding the interests of the Geneva manufacturer as their own. From the 1900s to the 1930s, Tiffany & Co. played a critical role in maintaining relationships between mega-collectors, such as Henry Graves Junior and Patek Philippe, often commissioning very important complications upon special order. In 2008, Patek Philippe opened a boutique at the renowned Tiffany retail venue on Fifth Avenue, further solidifying their relationship.

To date, Tiffany & Co. is the only North American brand to have their name “double stamped” on the dial of a Patek Philippe timepiece. These “double stamped” watches are highly desirable to collectors and can only be acquired at Tiffany & Co. boutiques in New York. With the influence of the internet and social media, collectors are increasingly drawn to the popularity of “double-stamped” models for their distinctiveness and rarity.

The Nautilus was first introduced in 1976 and it quickly became a symbol of luxury and prestige. Designed by the legendary Gerald Genta in the midst of quartz crisis, he is also responsible for creating other iconic and revolutionary watches that are highly coveted in the current market. A departure from traditional round watch designs, the Nautilus features a distinct octagonal shape inspired by a porthole on a ship. The watch also featured a unique integrated bracelet design that was unlike anything seen before. Over the years, the collection has undergone several updates and iterations, but the classic design has remained largely unchanged as Genta has already perfected it over 40 years ago.

In 2006, the watch maison released the iconic reference 5711 which does not need a proper introduction as it is one of the most coveted luxury sports watch of the century, a watch that is synonymous with Patek Philippe. Retaining most of the design elements of the original Nautilus, its case is slim and perfect for any wrist sizes. The in-house calibre 26-330 SC, on the other hand, can be admired from the sapphire crystal display back. Until 2021, Patek Philippe decided to officially discontinue this well-loved reference which caused a shockwave in the watch community. As a last firework for this reference, Patek Philippe came out with a surprise by announcing possibly the biggest release of the decade.

Drenched in a magnificent and highly sought-after Tiffany Blue® color, it is a soft, pastel shade of blue that is often described as being soothing and calming. The vibrant color is reminiscent of the blue-green hues that you might find in a tropical ocean or a clear sky on a sunny day. It is delicate, elegant and has never seen in any other Patek Philippe watches.

Limited to 170 pieces only, the timepiece represents the 170th anniversary of the partnership between Patek Philippe and Tiffany and Co. with its case back written “170th Anniversary - 1851-2021 - Tiffany & Co. - Patek Philippe”. A true icon in the world of luxury watches, the current lot combined distinctive design, unparalleled craftsmanship, and rich history that have made it one of the most coveted timepieces in the world.

Offered in brand new condition, the watch has never been worn before and it is complete with all the accompanying accessories. Sotheby's is extremely honored to present an example of this privileged model for our 50th anniversary auction in Asia.
